17th Edition VoltiBLOG

James HumtGoodbye 16th Edition – hail the 17th!

The 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS7671 - 2008) is NOW. All, the waiting is over. Today is finally the day when we say goodbye to the 16th Edition that has served us so well for 15 years. We have come a long way since 1882, when the Society of Telegraph Engineers and Electricians, later to become the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), published the ‘Rules and Regulations for the Prevention of Fire Risks arising from Electric Lighting’. This, effectively the first edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, was a simple four-page document.

From today, all electrical installation work in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland must conform to the 17th Edition. The only exception is for jobs started prior to today, which can continue to be completed under the 16th Edition, if started with it and as long as the client agrees.

Views on the 17th Edition vary – from ‘it’s a cowboy’s charter’ to ‘the new regulations will be great’, and just about everything in between. However, whatever your opinion, this is what you now have to work with. At Voltimum UK, we believe that there’s not much that a competent installer cannot quite easily get to grips with, especially if the many 17th Edition courses are made full use of. Go to it and good luck!
