James Humt17th Edition – approaching a year from publication

The 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS7671 - 2008) was published on the 1st January this year, 11 months ago. So approaching the anniversary, and just a month after the Republic of Ireland’s own version – the 4th Edition of the National Wiring Rules, was itself published, it’s worth reiterating what both the 17th Edition and the Irish 4th Edition are all about.

BS 7671: 2008 Requirements for Electrical Installations, IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition is essentially a significant restructuring to maintain technical alignment with CENELEC harmonisation documents. The 17th Edition has also adopted the IEC numbering system. Therefore, the layout and parts have been completely revised, with many chapters having been completely rewritten – although some sections, such as Part 1, for example, are largely unchanged. The principle reason for producing the Irish Fourth Edition is basically the same - progress on international harmonisation of wiring rules in IEC and CENELEC (go to ETCI - www.etci.ie) to read more about it.

In the meantime, please make use of our BLOG facility below. We still want to hear your views on what the 17th Edition means to you.
